Massachusetts has the best healthcare while Mississippi has the worst
Foster City, CA: June 13, 2019 – MoneyRates.com released a study today on the quality of healthcare in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Seven different factors were analyzed based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The analysis showed that location of residency can impact access, cost and effectiveness of healthcare services.
Based on an average ranking of the criteria, Massachusetts emerged as the best state for healthcare. It outranked most states in five out of seven categories. Mississippi ranked last in four out of seven categories, making it the state with the worst healthcare. The report assessed:
- Health-insurance coverage
- Age-adjusted mortality
- Vaccination rates
- Infant mortality
- Nursing-home availability
- Hospital availability
- Practicing physicians per capita
Recognizing that significant differences exist in healthcare across the nation, MoneyRates.com debuted an interactive map to help consumers review the conditions in each state. The comparison tool shows an expanded, side-by-side view of the seven categories that make up each state’s overall healthcare ranking.

Other notable findings included surprising disparities from state to state:
- Texas residents are more than six times as likely to lack health insurance as residents of Massachusetts
- The age-adjusted mortality rate in Mississippi is 63% higher than that of Hawaii
- Children in Oregon are nearly three times as likely as children in Massachusetts to be unvaccinated
- The infant mortality rate in Mississippi is more than twice as high as in Massachusetts, Iowa, California, New Jersey or Vermont
